“This is a wine that deserves to be in every serious collector’s cellar”
James Suckling on Tenuta San Guido

Located on the Tuscan coast, with views overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Tenuta San Guido has left an indelible mark on the world of viticulture. The iconic Sassicaia played a pivotal role in revolutionising the perception of Italian wines on the global stage, to the extent that it has even been granted its own DOC classification, Bolgheri Sassicaia.

Founded in the 1940s, visionary Mario Incisa della Rocchetta noticed the similarities of the site to Graves in Bordeaux given the stony soil and influence of the cooling sea breeze. Indeed, Sassicaia loosely translates to 'place with lots of rocks.' So, instead of using the native Sangiovese, Sassicaia has utilised a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc typically favoured on the stonier sites of Bordeaux.

Their second wine, Guidalberto was first produced in 2000 and includes Merlot in the Cabernet-based blend to provide a slightly earlier drinking experience. Le Difese, first launched in 2002, is primarily based on Sangiovese with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, offering a more red-fruit dominant expression that can be enjoyed right away.
