Château Gloria

Château Gloria occupies a rather unique position in Bordeaux. Despite lying amongst some of the finest vineyards in Saint Julien, it is not, technically speaking, a Classified Growth. The reason is simply one of timing. The estate was assembled by Henri Martin during the twentieth century, more than a century after the famous 1855 Classification, meaning it could never be included, regardless of the quality of its vineyards or wines.

In many respects, that has proved to be a blessing for those of us buying the wine. Without the cachet of a Grand Cru Classé title, Gloria has never been able to command the same prices as many of its illustrious neighbours, yet it has long produced wines that comfortably hold their own alongside them. Vintage after vintage, it represents one of the smartest buys in the Médoc.

The estate's vineyards are spread across some of Saint Julien's finest gravel croups, with parcels sitting alongside illustrious names such as Château Léoville Barton, Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Saint Pierre. Those deep Günzian gravel soils provide excellent drainage while encouraging the vines to root deeply, producing wines that combine ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with the poise, structure and longevity for which Saint Julien is rightly celebrated.

I've often thought of Gloria as something of a more accessible, more affordable Léoville Barton. It shares that unmistakable Saint Julien character of blackcurrant fruit, cedar, graphite and understated elegance, albeit in a slightly earlier drinking, more approachable style. It may never carry the prestige of its famous neighbour, but in terms of sheer drinking pleasure and value for money, there are few wines in Bordeaux that I return to more readily.
