C de Calon Ségur 2022 is deeply coloured and immediately appealing in the glass. Perhaps I am predisposed to like it, but it does make a very persuasive first impression.
The nose is packed with small, concentrated berries: wild raspberry, blackcurrant and boysenberry, with plenty of lift and energy. On the palate there is a lovely richness to the fruit, almost compote-like, but without ever becoming heavy or sweet. The tannins are polished and silky, giving just enough grip to keep everything in shape, while the freshness carries the wine beautifully.
What is particularly impressive is how well the 15% alcohol is handled. On paper, one might expect a little warmth, but there is none that I can detect. Instead, it feels bright, juicy and remarkably well balanced, with a clean, lingering finish.
I think this is superb value for money, and it is absolutely the sort of wine I will be buying for my own "cellar".
