Critic reviews
"The 2023 Le Petit Haut Lafitte reveals fresh and dark aromas of licorice, smoke, dark wild berries and violet. Medium to full-bodied, it is more structured and serious than Les Hauts de Smith, with a layered, structured mid-palate, a fleshy core of fruit and a long, saline, chalky finish. Classically composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, it is matured in 30% new oak barrels."
Yohan Castaing, April 2024, RobertParker.com
"The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte has a higher-toned, more vibrant bouquet than the Les Hauts de Smith: black cherries mixed with iodine and potpourri scents. The oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, cohesive and very Pessac in style with a touch of flint and brine. Maybe there is not the persistence of the previous finish, but still a lovely wine that might mature better in bottle than you might presuppose."
Neal Martin, February 2026, Vinous.com
"The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is super elegant and precise. Blue-toned fruit, graphite, dried herbs, crushed rocks, gravel, incense, licorice and crème de cassis are nicely amplified. Strong savory and mineral Cabernet notes build through the mid-palate and into the resonant, expressive finish. This is a striking wine in its peer group, and it should be a fine value, too."
Antonio Galloni, March 2026, Vinous.com
"This has a big structure of polished tannins that are energetic and punchy. Medium to full body with beautiful blackcurrants, as well as dark tobacco and wet earth. Chewy at the end, but a pointed and focused finish. More structured than 2022. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. From organically grown grapes. "
James Suckling, April 2024, JamesSuckling.com
"More Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. It has another level of elegance, with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, graphite, chocolate, and scorched earth. It offers beautifully balanced, ripe, polished tannins and a great finish. "
